Description

The study of short-lived states, whether at the edge of nuclear stability or just above a reaction threshold, represents a complex and multifaceted domain where few-body physics emerges from the interactions of many nucleons. Recent years have seen a surge in experimental observations that continue to challenge our current models of the nucleus. As instrumentation advances rapidly, a widening gap has emerged between nuclear modeling capabilities and the data being collected. 

To address this gap and stimulate new ideas and collaborations, this workshop proposes a fresh approach by reimagining the traditional format. We aim to shift the focus toward young scientists with an interest in nuclear physics and few-body systems. By empowering these emerging researchers to cross disciplinary boundaries, share techniques, and collaborate on unresolved problems - identified by senior theorists and experimentalists or newly raised during the workshop - we hope to break the current impasse in theoretical modeling and to connect different generations working in the rich and exciting field of nuclear, hadronic and atomic few-body physics.

      Accurate modeling of nuclear dynamics is essential to understand how chemical elements are formed in stars and other extreme astrophysical environments. Such dynamical processes are naturally described by the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. In this talk, I will introduce a time-dependent coupled-cluster approach to solve it. As a first application, I will focus on how to compute nuclear response functions from the time evolution of the many-body wave function. I will show that this new method is in excellent agreement with static results for electric dipole responses in light and medium-mass nuclei. I will also discuss how the picture of giant and pygmy dipole resonances as collective oscillations of protons against neutrons emerge from evolving proton and neutron densities in time, and present results in the strong-field regime, where the system exhibits signatures of chaotic behavior.

      I will discuss the basics of particle-momentum correlations in heavy-ion collisions, giving an introduction to the origins of the technique and showing its application to some simple physical systems. In doing so, we will explore the phenomenological behavior of correlation functions and touch on current challenges in the field. The topic is especially interesting as it provides insight into the interactions of very short-lived particles produced in the collision process.

      Efimov universality describes three-body systems near unitarity, where large scattering lengths make their properties essentially independent of short-range interaction details. This regime is marked by discrete scale invariance, reflected in a geometric spectrum of trimers. In ultracold atomic gases, external magnetic fields allow precise tuning of interactions to the resonant regime, while confinement in traps enables the exploration of extreme spatial compression. Theoretical studies model this compression through an effective continuous dimension, showing that beyond a critical value the discrete scale invariance of three dimensions is suppressed and replaced by continuous scale invariance. Remarkably, nuclear physics offers a natural analogue: two-neutron halo nuclei are weakly bound systems sustained by a fine-tuned neutron–core interaction, leading to a very large scattering length. In this context, Efimov physics provides the framework to analyze their geometry, including the mean distances among constituents, governed by scaling laws set by a single three-body parameter.
